Getting Stuff Done

The quilt in the last post is finished, which will be returned to Project Linus  next month.

I also finished the second sock. That didn’t take long to do.

The pattern is by Kay Jones of The Bakery Bears knitted in King Cole ZigZag sock yarn.  This is how the colourway looks in stocking stitch  below.  It’s quite is busy pattern so it was difficult to start in the same place at the beginning of the second sock, so they’re not matching.

This week I pulled out a couple of sewing items that have been hibernating for some time. First is this piece of shadow appliqué.  The petals and leaves were layered under sheer organza and trapped by free machine quilting. Metallic thread or sequins were sewn on top to be made into a cushion cover but I never got around to it so I just put binding around it and it’ll be a wall hanging.

Another project I picked up was a quilt as you go piece I’d sewn having seen an article in Today’s Quilter. I got as far as the blue fabric in the photo below.

I decided to add another round, however I also had to add backing fabric and the wadding was sandwiched in between.  Held tightly I then top stitched.  That worked ok and I added strips top and bottom in the same way.  I’ve now got to the point of adding binding strips on the sides, then top and bottom.  The size is 24” wide by 27.5” long, so called a small pram or bassinet size. It’s still got the clips on the top, but I’ll soon get that slip-stitched down.  It’ll go to Project Linus.

This is the back, below.  It has several seams but the pattern is such, you would have to find them. Originally I was going to use it for stitch practice so I wasn’t bothered about the bottom thread.  I’m not going to take it out now.

And another picture.

I quite like how it’s going and it’ll be another thing ticked off.

But I still have a lot of orphan blocks that need a home and I’ll get round to using them….

August

The Neat Ripple blanket (still in progress) is the background for this month’s marker. But this month has already seen some action.

It was my oldest granddaughter’s 18th  birthday and a small family gathering was held at her home in Sussex to celebrate.  What a milestone to have a grandchild that old!

My friend and I went to Wareham for the annual Dorset Arts and Crafts Showcase, which has competition craft articles, artisan sales and specialist exhibitions.  It’s always nice to see different crafts. Below are a few of the quilts

Above is a bicycle disc brake with zen tangle and the spikes had free machined pieces on them.
A flower arrangement by the local flower arranging group
A mixed media paining with beads used for the kingfishers.

A lovely morning of arts and crafts.

At the end of July I had a lot of projects in progress.  Here’s one that the first finish for August

I made most of these L shaped blocks last year after seeing in one of the Love Patchwork & Quilting magazines.  It made use of 2.5” coloured strips (some from my Mum’s stash) together with low volume background fabrics.  There was some orange print fabric from Project Linus which I used as a strip to extend the backing fabric and for the border.

Next thing is layer up the kit quilt and get that quilted

Another ‘finish’ is a sock. Yes I know the other one has to be made to make up a pair but that’s in progress now. So this is a second finish up for August.

Let’s see how the rest of this month goes….
